Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is a widely cultivated vegetable in Brazil, especially in its curly leaf varieties. However, it faces challenges caused by adverse conditions such as temperature, humidity, and rainfall. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of soil management practices on lettuce production over two consecutive growing seasons. The technique explored was the use of incorporation and mulching with Braquiaria. The application of mulching and plant incorporation using straw from Braquiaria brought significant benefits to lettuce cultivation. Besides controlling the growth of unwanted weeds, this cover also provided ideal conditions for healthy plant growth concerning temperature and humidity. The study emphasized the importance of soil quality, which was assessed through chemical and biological indicators. Four different soil management methods were tested: control; soil covered with Braquiaria mulching; soil incorporated with Braquiaria straw; and soil with both Braquiaria mulching and incorporation. The results showed differences in lettuce production, highlighting the positive impact of Braquiaria incorporation on the dry weight of both aerial parts and roots. In the second growing season, the plots managed with Braquiaria incorporation had higher lettuce yields, while the plots without Braquiaria showed a reduction in production. Soil temperature was monitored, and it was evident that plots with cover maintained more stable temperatures, demonstrating that this practice is effective in thermal regulation of the soil. Moreover, the presence of mulching had a positive impact on the soil microbial community, as indicated by the increase in Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon (SMBC), essential for nutrient availability and soil health. Regarding chemical parameters and the presence of weeds, the results showed an increase in potassium levels at the end of the two growing seasons and a reduction in weed population density. Therefore, the use of Braquiaria as cover and incorporation in the soil resulted in significant improvements in the cultivation of curly purple lettuce.
