Thus, it is necessary to implement structured school-based PA programs to analyze their effects in the mental health outcomes of this population. Objective: To analyze the effects of a 12-week intervention with moderate/vigorous-intensity physical exercise on adolescents’ mental health indicators (anxiety, depression and stress). Methods: This study adopted a 12-week cluster randomized controlled trial design. Two public schools from Jacarezinho City, Brazil, agreed to participate and were randomized in Intervention Group (3 classes) and Control Group (3 classes). The intervention included structured physical exercise sessions within Physical Education classes, twice a week, for 20 minutes per lesson. The intensity of the exercises was monitored by heart rate sensor. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – Short Form (DASS-21) was used to measure symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the effects of the intervention on mental health indicators. Significance was set at p<0.05. Results: A total of 131 adolescents were included in the analysis (52.7% female; age 13.2±0.90). There were no significant intervention effects on depression (mean difference: 0.43; 95% CI -0.44 – 1.31; p= 0.33), anxiety (mean difference: 0.40; 95% CI -0.84 – 1.64; p= 0.52) and stress (mean difference: 0.44; 95% CI -0.95 – 1.82; p= 0.53). Conclusion: The 12-week intervention with physical exercise implemented within Physical Education classes was not effective to improve adolescents’ mental health indicators.
