However, rising electricity costs have directly affected the poultry sector and the use of this management practice. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of LED lighting on the performance and egg quality of commercial laying hens, to quantify electricity consumption in kWh, and to analyse the financial efficiency of LED systems. The experiment was carried out on a commercial farm using four California‑type poultry houses, housing 8,000 Lohmann LSL hens aged 39 and 59 weeks. Treatments consisted of 5 W LED lamps (6500 K) and 9 W compact fluorescent lamps (6400 K). The birds received a 16‑hour photoperiod (natural + artificial light) and diets formulated to meet their nutritional requirements. The experimental design was completely randomized, with two treatments and eight replicates. Performance parameters — egg production (%), feed intake (g/bird/day), feed conversion ratio (kg/dozen eggs), feed conversion (kg/kg), eggs per bird housed, and livability — showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) between treatments. Average egg weight (g), specific gravity (g/cm³), shell strength (kgf), and shell percentage (%) also did not differ (P > 0.05); however, Haugh unit scores were significantly higher (P < 0.05) for eggs from the compact fluorescent treatment. Electricity consumption was higher (P > 0.05) under the fluorescent‑lamp lighting system; LED lamps provided more than 50% energy savings while delivering equivalent light output, and also showed high financial efficiency due to their longer service life.
