    Although plant extracts are effective for seed treatment, there are reports of possible negative effects on germination, germination rate, and seedling emergence. The influence of allelochemicals on each seed is subtle; the germination process is less sensitive than seedling growth, so these effects represent only secondary signalling occurring at the molecular and cellular level. Accordingly, this study aimed to verify the allelopathic effect of orange and garlic plant extracts on seed germination and subsequent seedling development in carrot, using pre‑germinated seeds. The work was conducted at the Seed Analysis Laboratory of the Universidade Estadual do Norte do Paraná, Luiz Meneghel Campus, using five lots of 'Brasília' carrot seeds obtained from a registered supplier, free of seed treatment, and stored in hermetically sealed containers. Plant extracts were prepared by infusion at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%, using orange peel and peeled garlic cloves, crushed manually with a knife. The study comprised three experiments with the following objectives: I — Determine the appropriate immersion duration for carrot seeds in orange and garlic extracts; seeds were immersed in the extracts and in distilled water for 15 s, 30 s, 1 min, 2 min, 4 min, and 8 min, and the percentage increase in seed fresh mass was subsequently recorded; II — Assess the effect of orange and garlic extracts applied to carrot seeds either by immersion or on filter paper, using the first count and standard germination tests; III — Evaluate the effect of orange and garlic extracts on carrot seedling development using pre‑germinated seeds (radicle ≥ 2 mm). It can be concluded that garlic extract should not be used for carrot seed treatment at the concentrations tested. However, when applied to seedlings, it can be used safely at 10% concentration without impairing seedling growth. Orange extract applied as a 1‑minute seed soak at concentrations of 10% and 20% improved seed germination and supported seedling development and growth.
