    Currently Asian soybean rust (ASR), causative agent Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is the most destructive disease to the crop. Control strategies stand out as: chemical, the most widely used, but with increasingly reduced efficiency due to selection of adapted mutants; genetic, with no genotype capable of conferring broad resistance to the disease; and the sanitary void, determined by legal regulations to establish a minimum period of 60 days without soybean plants in the field. In this scenario, the use of biological control is presented as an alternative, as already employed in other crops and diseases. Among existing possibilities, the results achieved in this study indicate a species of the genus Penicillium for ASR biocontrol. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the use of Penicillium sp. as a biological control agent for ASR and to define the best preparation method. Accordingly, experiments were conducted: germination tests in Petri dishes and 48‑well plates; assays on detached soybean leaves cultivated in Petri dishes; greenhouse assays on soybean plants; and finally, a field assay. The preparation methods tested for Penicillium sp. were spore suspension; use of the supernatant in natura (from the culture medium); filtered supernatant (free of fungal structures); and filtered and autoclaved supernatant. The evaluated parameters were percentage of germinated spores, AUDPC, and percentage of control relative to the control treatment. Germination tests of P. pachyrhizi spores following inoculation with Penicillium sp. showed significant control results. It was observed that although Petri dish assays and assays carried out on whole plants pointed to different preparation methods as being more efficient, all assays demonstrated the potential of Penicillium sp. for the biological control of ASR. Future trials, especially under field conditions, are essential to determine the biocontrol potential, its application method, and integration into crop management.
