In a completely randomized design, 22 White Dorper ewes were divided into two treatments: 100% corn silage and 100% sorghum silage added with 0.5% urea. The variables analyzed were the weight gain of the ewes, dry matter consumption in relation to % of live weight (DMI %LW) and reproductive performance. The DMI %LW of the SS group was lower than that of the SM group in the first two experimental months (4.52 vs 3.40 and 3.58 vs 2.86 CMS %BW, respectively). corn silage and the animals in this group gained weight (3.22 kg) during the experimental period, while the animals in the SS group lost weight (6.95 kg). At the end of the work, analyzing the reproductive performance (pregnancy rate) of the groups, the same pregnancy rate (54.5%) was observed in both treatments. Following, 12 White Dorper crossbred lambs were used in the same design and treatments, but the roughage was fixed at 50% of the dry matter requirement, another 50% completed with concentrate, in both treatments. The animals remained in the experiment until they reached slaughter weight (35 kg). At the end, analyzes of average daily weight gain and days of confinement of the different treatments were performed. No statistical differences were found between the two treatments in average daily gain, the lambs of the corn silage group reached slaughter weight four days before the sorghum silage group.
