    Factors related to sugarcane quality are essential for assessing raw‑material efficiency, the most important parameters being Brix and ATR, which represent sugar content and total recoverable sugar in sugarcane. These factors are directly influenced by the apical portion of the stalk, which has lower sucrose concentration and higher water content. Accordingly, the objective was to determine the optimal topping height and correlate it with potential yield loss from the practice. A completely randomised design was used, in a 6×3 factorial arrangement with three replicates, comprising six topping levels: (T1) no topping; (T2) topping at the first internode; (T3) topping at the second internode; (T4) topping at the third internode; (T5) topping at the fourth internode; and (T6) topping at the fifth internode. This gave 18 treatments evaluated at three harvest stages: early, mid‑, and late season across both crop years. Results from the 2017 and 2018 harvests showed that topping significantly affected laboratory analyses; sugarcane left untopped recorded the lowest values for Brix, juice Pol, and ATR, and the highest juice AR (apparent reducing sugar). Untopped cane also yielded more in 2017, owing to high rainfall. It is concluded that, based on acceptable levels of Brix, juice Pol and ATR, combined with minimal yield loss and favourable juice AR values, the best practice is to top sugarcane at the second internode.
