Recommendations on physical activity suggest that children and adolescents should perform, on average, 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day, however, 81% of adolescents do not comply with these recommendations. Given this scenario, there is an inconclusive understanding of the means responsible for changing behavior in physical activity, and it is necessary to confirm which are the main mediators of the practice of physical activity in order to develop more effective strategies. Objective: To analyze the associations between intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, satisfaction of basic psychological needs, social support and perception of the environment with the practice of physical activity in adolescents aged between 12 and 15 years. Methods: The present study had a cross-sectional design. A total of 617 adolescent students from public schools in Jacarezinho, PR, participating in the ActTeens program, were evaluated. The practice of physical activity was measured using the PAQ-A questionnaire. To assess intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy, social support and perception of the environment, specific questionnaires were used. In the statistical analysis, the Shapiro Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the data, and the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests to compare the scores of the variables between the physical activity percentiles. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to verify the relationship between the constructs and physical activity. Results: Adolescents ranked in the highest percentiles for physical activity had higher values of intrinsic motivation, basic psychological needs from peers and the Physical Education teacher, and parental support compared to adolescents in the lower percentiles. Intrinsic motivation (β = 0.26), satisfying the basic psychological needs of colleagues (β = 0.21) and the Physical Education teacher (β = 0.12) and parental support (β = 0.32) demonstrated a significant association with the practice of physical activity in both genders (p<0.05). By inserting intrinsic motivation as a mediator of the association between parental support and the practice of physical activity, the value of the direct effect was reduced (β = 0.24), with a mediated effect of 25%. Similarly, intrinsic motivation mediated the relationships between teacher's basic psychological needs (83%) and peers' basic psychological needs (38%) with physical activity. Conclusion: The psychosocial variables with the greatest effect in the mediation analyzes were intrinsic motivation, meeting the basic psychological needs of peers, and parental support, respectively.
